Late next week the Software Information Industry Association is hosting their OnDemand Conference in San Jose. I’m looking forward to connecting with other folks in the SaaS space and hearing about what they are learning and searching for new ways to make our service even better for our customers.
I’m also speaking on a panel about the role of ecosystems in SaaS businesses. I’m looking forward to this since QuickBase is such a great application for Solution Providers and custom developers. Our success depends on our ability to deliver experience that our customers love and our "ecosystem" of Solution Providers and Developers are an important part of that.
Most of all though, I’d like to connect with QuickBase customers who are either local or are in the area for some reason, so please let me know if you’d like to meet. I always like to hear stories from our customers and get feedback on how we can be better. You can reach me at: bill at quickbase.com. Hope to see you soon.

QuickBase Desktop is a Microsoft Access database that can synchronize data between QuickBase and a computer that has Microsoft Access installed. Today it is used by those that want to…
- Integrate QuickBase data with data in other systems
- Consolidate data for centralized reporting using other business intelligence technologies (e.g. Crystal Reports)
- Backup QuickBase data onto local computers
But sometimes QuickBase Desktop can be hard to manage when applications are large because the synchronization can take a long time. Here’s a “best practice” that Claude von Roesgen, the father of “QBDesktop”, came up with…
- Create a new role that can only see those fields that you must synch.
- Share the applications with a new user using the new role.
- Rebuild the QBDesktop database using that user’s credentials and the new role. This will reset which fields QBDesktop syncs.
- Setup the daily synch using the new user account.
By using this technique we were able to take an application that had ~300 fields and over 100K records and we cut the time it took to complete the daily synch dramatically while also improving reliability. We did this by creating a role that didn’t have access to about 90% of the fields (we took out the built-in fields, formula fields, lookup fields, summary fields and report link fields) because we only needed to backup the raw information in the table. Claude realized that most people don’t need to backup the vast majority of the fields in a QuickBase and he came up with a great way to easily implement it…thanks Claude!
I hope you find this helpful…

After a long period of relative
inactivity we’ve decided to revive our blog and begin actively sharing what
we’re up to on the QuickBase team – because we think it’s some great stuff and
we’d love to talk to you about it. Since
I joined the team earlier this year as the new general manager I’ve been heads
down, focusing on learning about our customers, our employees, and our
business. What I’ve learned is that we
have a great base of customers with lots of real QuickBase fans that have
helped drive the growth we’re seeing. The other driver is a great team of talented and fired-up employees.
is driven by our employees’ deep customer understanding it seems only natural
for us to use this blog as a way to share what we’re thinking and get your
thoughts and feedback. I hope you’ll
find it useful and that you’ll come back and comment often.
So, I’d like to share one of my
top priorities at the moment – hiring! There are so many great opportunities for us to do more and make
QuickBase even better and we have openings across the business for people who
are the best at what they do. We’d love
any referrals you have, so here’s a QuickBase with all of our open positions: https://www.quickbase.com/db/baipxuifr?a=q&qid=7

Tonight I was reminded again of the versatility of QuickBase. We all received an e-mail from our CEO giving then company an update on the wildfires in southern California. We have a number of offices and many people that have been effected by the fires and forced to leave their homes.
Part of this e-mail update was a link to a QuickBase application that had been set up, within hours, to facilitate communication of employee evacuation orders as well as registration for employees willing to provide temporary housing for their displaced co-workers. I received the e-mail about 45 mins ago and there is currently housing available for over 65 family members within the area.
In the almost four years I’ve been with QuickBase, I’ve seen customers deploy QuickBase applications with incredible speed and effectiveness during all sorts of natural disasters. During the Florida hurricanes of two summers ago, I received a call from one customer that needed to track the whereabouts of his entire staff after their office was destroyed. Working with their president to quickly build and deploy that app was emotional and very cool as his employees started communicating their whereabouts.
Our thoughts are with all the folks in the path of the wildfires!
