5 Ways to Be Happier at Work

We all have heard by now that happy employees stay at companies longer and perform much better. Employers who want to compete for the best talent have to be concerned about this issue and take it seriously. A new survey by Delivering Happiness at Work of 11,000 users in over 90 countries has uncovered some interesting ways for people to become happier employees. If you work for a smaller company, you’re 25% more likely to be happy at work. Managers who supervise others are 27% more likely to be happier at work. If you work at a job that involves direct service, you’re 75% more likely to be happier as opposed to sales. If you’re in your 40s, then you won’t be as happy at work. Many employees in corporate America right now, especially millennials, are choosing happiness over higher pay. They understand that if you enjoy what you do, and you’re treated with respect, you’re willing to work harder, longer and have more longevity at your company. Here are some tips for employees who want to be happier at work:

1. Be accountable for your career development. You can’t rely on other people to help you develop as a person or even professionally. The reason for this is simple: you have the most to gain by investing in yourself. Think about your career goals and how to best meet them each and every day. Take on projects that most align to your strengths and interests, read books, study industry blogs, take classes and find mentors.

2. Make friends around the office. Force yourself to meet and reconnect with your co-workers daily outside of your normal tasks and meetings. A good way to do this is by getting coffee with them in the morning, having lunch with them in the afternoon and engaging in outside activities (including sports) with them after work. Be friendly to your colleagues and help support them with their projects and you’ll feel better about yourself.

3. Don’t take on too many projects. One of the reasons why many businesses fail is because they try and be everything to everyone and release too many projects. You need to do your job and then maybe a few extra projects that will help you advance at work, but stay away from everything else if possible. Don’t get sidetracked, because then you will become more stressed and less focused. You also might not even be able to deliver for everyone.

4. Be healthier in all that you do. If you eat healthy both at work and outside of work, you will feel better. During the day, try walking outside and take small breaks. This will refresh your mind and give you more energy. In addition, you should exercise regularly, because the better you feel about yourself, the happier you’ll be and the better you’ll perform.

5. Do the work you aren’t excited about early. When you first walk into the office, you should work on the project that you aren’t excited about or the one that posses the biggest challenge. Once you get that out of the way, the rest of the day will be a breeze for you and you’ll feel more accomplished, and thus happier.
