THINKstrategies, Inc., announced that Intuit’s online database, QuickBase has been named the latest winner of the Best of SaaS Showplace (BOSS) Awards program. The program is aimed at promoting the measurable business benefits being delivered by today’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions.
Some of the customer examples that were highlighted in the press release represent the benefits QuickBase customers are seeing, whether they are using QuickBase for Customer Service Management, SOX Management, Project Management or CRM:
- Citizens National Bank spent $150,000 for Siebel CRM software and an additional $350,000 in integration costs, only to find out that it didn’t meet the needs of their relationship banking team. Citizens replaced Siebel with QuickBase, costing only $249 for 10 users, plus $3.00/per month for each additional user, improving the productivity of their call center team and level of customer service delivered.
- Google estimates that QuickBase delivers cost savings in the $100,000-200,000 range by saving 1,500-2,000 administrative man-hours of work over the course of a year managing its SOX compliance efforts, according to Erik Jonte, Google’s IT Risk Manager.
- Kayak.com avoided spending $300,000 a year in salaries and benefits for an estimated 12 extra staffers to run traditional customer-service software by leveraging QuickBase for a subscription fee of $10,000 per year. Kayak uses QuickBase to manage projects, vendors, and some accounts.
- Pure Water Technologies estimates it has saved $50,000-$100,000 annually by migrating to QuickBase from Saleforce.com. This includes reducing administrative staff by 75 percent; saving $3,000 per month in CRM cost; and gaining more than 50 hours of sales time daily.

If you thought QuickBase was a powerful database before you are really going to be impressed with the addition of formulas, summary and lookup fields to our forms.
This isn’t just hiding or showing fields or sections on a form. This is controlling your form with formulas, changes to lookup, summary and reference fields.
This opens up many new possibilities for forms:
Say you have projects and you have a field called [Project Type]. You use that to describe whether it is a Marketing, Sales or Support type of project. Every time you add a task you need a different set of fields to show based on the project type. Before you would have to create a long task form with all the unneeded fields showing. With form rules now sensitive to lookup fields your project type can now control what your task form looks like. It’s fast, easy and simple.
How about a better way to keep on top of your project’s issues? Say you want to see your issues when they are open but want them to go away when closed. Using a Summary field you can now have them pop up when opened and disappear when closed.
Here’s another one, let’s say we are working on a task and it is overdue. How about using form rules to pops up an alert screen, switches the priority to high and require a note be entered? You can do that too.
We also enhanced our QuickBase alert functionality. You will notice them in applications and on your My QuickBase page.

“I cannot express how excited we are for the dynamic form rules. First conditional drop downs and now this! Christmas was early this year! Thanks QB Team!”
-Melissa
“This is incredible!!! I am so happy to be able to have more power over my form rules! This will save all those creative workarounds I was used to dreaming up! …Conditional Drop Downs & Form Rules!!!! Thank you QuickBase!!!”
-Hunter
“Thanks for listening and making it happen. Keep the enhancements coming!!”

Last night TechCrunch announced that Coghead, a startup that built an online database, is going out of business. Personally, I’m sorry to hear about it. I’ve met some of the Coghead team and they are a smart, entreprenuerial team. This is an important class of applications and there is a lot of opportunity, but in this environment it’s very hard to be a startup dependent on outside funding. Today, I definitely feel lucky to be a part of Intuit, to be profitable, and to be the #1 player in the online database world. For QuickBase I certainly feel that everything is a little harder in this economic environment but this news certainly reminds us to be thankful about what is working.
Based on this news we thought about what Coghead users, partners, and employees will do. Here’s what we can offer:
- For Customers: We recognize that you need to move fast to replace Coghead and if you’re anything like QuickBase users, your apps are critical to your business. To help ease the transition we’re offering:
- Six months of free service to get started. We’d like you to be able to focus on getting your business transitioned and not covering a monthly subscription.
- Two hours of free consulting with a member of our QuickBase Business Consultant Program who can help rebuild your application in QuickBase
- Unlimited support
- Lastly, we will be offering webinars specifically for Coghead customers where we talk about QuickBase and discuss transition issues.
- You can visit our web page for the offer here.
- For Partners: For those of you who have built businesses around Coghead we’d like to offer participation in either our QuickBase Business Consultant Program or our Intuit Partner Platform.
- The QuickBase Consultant Program is perfect for Solution Providers who are good at working with customers to solve their unique problems with QuickBase. For customers you bring with you we will honor our 20% revenue sharing and we are working to organize a special free QuickBase training class specifically for partners coming from Coghead. As a QuickBase Business Consultant you’ll also be eligible to participate in our lead share program. If you are interested in the QuickBase Business Consultant Program please either apply directly to the program, or email darren_levy at intuit.com.
- The Intuit Partner Platform (IPP) is designed for Independent Software Vendors that want to build SaaS businesses targeting Intuit’s 4M small businesses. Like Coghead, IPP uses Adobe Flex for the User Interface so you should find some familiar tools. If you are interested in the Intuit Partner Platform, apply here, or contact alex_barnett at intuit.com.
- For Employees: Any Coghead employee who is interested can submit a resume to Intuit and we will do our best to get it in front of all the relevant hiring managers either inside or outside of the QuickBase team. Please send your resumes to sally_russell at intuit.com.
I wish Paul and his team the best and I hope we can help.

Product release scheduled for Saturday, February 21 at 8am EST
I wanted to take a moment and let the QuickBase community know about some of the new features that will be coming out with the February product release scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 21 at 8am.
“Reports” tab gets renamed “Home” tab
It’s more than just a new name. Our product team has added features that allow users to customize this new page even more. Now, in addition to adding your favorite reports you can also add free-form text boxes on your Home tab. You could use the boxes to add a quick list of favorite links, to-do lists, or even embed html, scripts, RSS or images from other websites. It’s like having the features your come to love about application dashboards right on your Home tab.
Conditional Dropdowns
For advanced users “conditional dropdowns” provide a new tool for improving usability and simplifying data entry. Application builders can now filter a dropdown choice by leveraging relationships. For example, if you have a long list of Cities, you can set it up so that the user selects the Country first, then the City dropdown is filtered by that Country. This is a popular request from our users and I know this feature will make the lives of app builders easier in a bunch of ways. Enjoy!
Still thirsty?
I’ll be posting some screen shots and links to support pages over the next couple of days. Those resources should give you a better sense of how these changes will allow you to get more out of QuickBase.
by Bill Lucchini under Customer Stories
As I’m approaching my second year running the QuickBase business, and my 15th year at Intuit, the thing that has always kept me motivated is the prospect of doing something that makes a real, meaninful difference for customers. What’s really interesting about the QuickBase business is that our customers do much cooler things than we do. We spend a lot of time thinking about how we can make the product and service better, but then, when it gets out in the wild, customers make it dance. Some of my favorite stories are below:
- Dan Pries at ProPoint Graphics tells us that his company hasn’t missed a deadline since implementing QuickBase.
- CIO’s like Vivek Kundra of Washington, D.C. are using QuickBase to replace some expensive enterprise applications. (Best of luck, Vivek! You have the QuickBase team’s vote!)
- PC Magazine uses QuickBase to track reviews and features. Also, we just won the Editor’s Choice award. Thanks!
- A major hospital runs its emergency room via QuickBase on a massive touch panel screen in their command center.
- Google saves $100k to $200k per year and 1,500 to 2,000 man-hours on Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance by using QuickBase.
2008 has been a big year for us. The general acceptance of online products (SaaS) grew rapidly this past year and, as the leader in the online database space, that energy led to a lot of new customers. Thank you to all of our users (over 350k) and I hope all of you come to work with the same energy and passion that I have to make a difference.
Lastly, I’m hungry for more. With so many new customers I’d love to hear about the cool things you’ve been able to do with QuickBase. Tell us your story! I invite you to comment on the blog and tell us the following information:
- The name of the organization where you use QuickBase
- Your title
- What you use QuickBase for including the type of application, how it relates to your business, and…
- How QuickBase has made a difference in your business. Has it helped you save money? Make money? Make better decisions?
Add your story (complete with the info above) and we’ll send you a QuickBase care package that includes a QuickBase polo shirt, “QuickBase The Missing Manual” by O’Reilly, and a $10 iTunes gift card. Oh yeah, please include your shirt size. :)
Deadline: As of Friday, 1/23/09 I’m going to draw the line on submissions and send out the care packages so make sure you post your story before then!
Thanks, and best wishes for a wonderful 2009!
by Peter Fearey under Industry Trends, Inside QuickBase
I recently presented the QuickBase business to 50+ marketing leaders at Intuit. During the presentation I made the statement that, “there’s a new market forming and QuickBase has the lead”.
I backed up the statement that “the market is forming” by saying that:
1) in the last year there have been many startups launching in our space, and
2) some established “packaged application” SaaS players have recently been trying to generalize their brands (e.g. salesforce.com and what they are doing with force.com)
I backed up the statement that “we’ve got the lead” by saying that:
1) Independent sources like compete.com show the startups not growing quickly, and
2) If you think about the packaged players with traction in their respective markets, I haven’t seen much public evidence of success with the more generalized offerings.
Compare that to QuickBase where we have over 200K purchased seats using 10’s of thousands of business applications…AND NO TWO APPLICATIONS ARE THE SAME! Because we’ve been focused on ease of use and customization for the last 5 years we’ve seen that every customer’s unique needs are being met by their owner personalization.
After I said that, someone asked me a simple question that, I must admit, I didn’t expect. He asked, “what’s the name of the new market”? I answered by referencing these “markets”…
1) “PaaS” (Platform as a Service). More and more bloggers are starting to place us and others like us in this category. For example, checkout Phil Wainewright’s great roundup of the PaaS space or what Duncan Riley wrote recently about PaaS.
2) Enterprise 2.0. Bill Ives from the Fast Forward Blog suggests we are an Enterprise 2.0 play.
3) Online Database. Many have described QuickBase as an online database. Most notably, checkout what Sean Aune wrote on Mashable.
I think the attributes of the new market are:
1) Targets business users and makes creating and customizing business applications simple,
2) Helps teams track and manage their business processes and workflow, and
3) Is offered through a SaaS model.
When flying home it occurred to me that I should see what others think. So…what market do you think we’re in- one of these or something completely new?
Peter
