How do I stop my append-only fields from being truncated when exporting to Excel?

'Append Only' fields that are stored in "expanded style" do not export to Excel correctly because they contain the leading dashes. Data is truncated because Excel sees the leading dash and reads it as a numeric field which has a limited size. If you change the Append Only field to "tight style" it does not put leading dashes and solves the problem going forward.
